Torre de Ballis

Anteprima

The imposing quadrangular tower of the Palazzo de Ballis emerges in the architectural panorama as a magnificent manifesto of fifteenth-century art, combining in itself the majesty of the forms with details of clear Catalan inspiration, particularly evident in the refined three-light window that adorns a round arch. This structure, fruit of the ingenuity and vision of Giovanni de Ballis, was erected as a tangible symbol of his status acquired through a profitable marriage. Giovanni, described as "special master of musia and morari", probably entrusted the design of the project to the architect Pietro Oddo, creating a work that still enchants for its elegance and craftsmanship.

The tower not only represents an exception in the architecture of the time for its grandeur and beauty, but also preserves the distinctive signs of the de Ballis family, as evidenced by the noble coat of arms elegantly positioned on the west corner. Similarly, the rear façade of the building is distinguished by the presence of a delicate mullioned window, which adds an additional touch of refinement to the whole.

The history of the De Ballis family, originally from Bologna, is inextricably intertwined with that of Alcamo from the 15th century, when Ballo De Ballis laid the foundations of its lineage in this land. The construction of the tower is not only a tribute to the prosperity achieved by the family, but also stands as a milestone in local history, symbol of a deep link between architecture, nobility and the events of the community of Alcamo. Today, the Palazzo de Ballis stands as a silent but eloquent witness of the past, inviting those who observe it to reflect on the intricate plots of history, culture and art that have shaped the city over the centuries.
