San Vito lo Capo
San Vito lo Capo village originally agricultural and maritime economy, is now known as one of the most important seaside resorts in Sicily for the beauty of its coast and the clarity of its sea. It was born at the end of the eighteenth century in the territory of the state property of Erice, at the foot of M. Monaco, in the white sandy bay between the two peaks of Capo S. Vito and Punta Solanto, around the ancient sanctuary of S. Vito. It is reached along the streets of Timpone and Piana di Sopra, overlooking the bay of Macari, a sixteenth-century tower, and where stands out, isolated, the chapel of St. Crescenza, an ancient place of worship dating back to the twelfth century.
The Sanctuary, fortified and equipped with accommodation for pilgrims in 1545, was built in 1200 together with the ancient trap almost as a coastal outpost of the city of Monte S. Giuliano (today’s Erice). Along the steep wall of Piana di Sopra and on the eastern side of M. Monaco, there are some caves in which important evidence of prehistoric human settlements has been found. Particularly interesting are the Grotta del Racchio, for the carvings depicting deer and other linear engravings, and the cave of Cala Mancina, for the engraving of an anthropomorphic figure. On the road that winds from the village overlooking the sea on the side of the M. Monaco between glimpses of landscape of great beauty and beauty, past the point Tannure you reach the tower of Impiso, the sixteenth century, at the edge of the Zingaro nature reserve, which seems to be guarding the same reserve.
