The Fountain of Saturn
The Fountain of Saturn, a historical emblem of Trapani, pays homage to the ancient patron deity of the city. Positioned majestically near the church of Sant'Agostino, in Piazza Saturno, this structure is not only a monument, but a meeting point between past and present.
Its origin is intertwined with the deeds of the Chiaramonte family, who in 1342, with foresight and dedication, financed the construction of the first "chiaramontano" aqueduct. This ambitious project aimed to channel drinking water from a remote source located in the district of Chiaramonta, at the foot of Mount Erice, directly at the gates of the city. The aqueduct, thanks to a series of strategic arches, greatly exceeded the risk of contamination with marine water, thus ensuring a vital source of fresh water to the inhabitants of Trapani.
In 1603, the fountain underwent a significant restoration that improved its efficiency: the wall was reinforced to make it waterproof and a specific pipeline was built to water the animals housed in the Serraglio di Sant'Agostino. But it was in the 18th century that the Fountain of Saturn received the touch of grace that made it famous: the addition of a refined baroque decoration and a marble statue depicting Saturn, which defined its visual and symbolic identity.
The renovation and embellishment has followed one another over the centuries, until the last restyling in 2018, each helping to preserve and enrich the beauty and functionality of the fountain. Today, the Fountain of Saturn is not only a tangible testimony of the rich history of Trapani and its link with water and divine protection, but is also a place of enchanting charm that continues to capture the admiration of citizens and visitors, keeping alive the memory of its ancient origins.
