Palazzo VII Aprile

Palazzo VII Aprile previously called Palazzo dei Giurati is one of the main buildings of the city of Marsala, as well as the seat of the City Council of the homonymous city.
It was called : Palazzo VII Aprile only in 1860, in memory of the bike, led by Abele Damiani, broke out in Marsala in the wake of the revolt of Gancia.

Its first construction dates back to 1576 to host the meetings of the Senate. It was completed in the fifteenth century by the architect Giuseppe Moccia, who was inspired by the style adopted by the Venetian engineer Andrea Palladio, famous for the arcades in Serliana. In the seventeenth century the building was restored, embellished and enlarged and became the official seat of the Jurors, of the Master Notary who burned the deeds, of the Captaincy and Civil Court and of the University Archives, as well as of the Public Archive of the City. Numerous restorations followed from there.

On its top there is a Roman clock, which was inserted in 1582. It is also equipped with a bell, inserted in 1615 , which was once rung to signal any emergency or extraordinary events , in addition to the daily chime of the hours. The clock, which was spring-loaded, was "victim" of pigeons,  which, passing on it, damaged it . It remained so stationary for a long time, until in the 1970s it was repaired and replaced with a new one.

Inside the building we can also find two large rooms : the Lapidi room and the clock room.   The first is the room where the City Council operates and owes its name to the presence of the many historical inscriptions, contained in it. The last epigraph in particular, recalls the visit of the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano of 11 May 2010 , on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the landing of the Thousand. The clock room, instead, is the room where the clock is kept, one of the oldest in Sicily.

Today the Palace can also be visited during the hours of the civic assembly. And sometimes, outside, it becomes home to some free events , such as fashion shows, exhibitions of paintings, theater performances, music concerts etc..
