Il Borgo di Erice

Located on the west coast of Sicily, under the province of Trapani, 13 km from the capital.
Characterized by the combination of different architectural styles: medieval, Arabic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, a testimony of the ancient history, as tortuous as this small village.
Inside you will find watchtowers, monasteries, gates, a mysterious castle and more than sixty churches, all enclosed by cyclopean walls.
The territory of Erice was much wider than we know it today.
The area was called Agro Ericino and included: the Valderice, part of Castellammare del Golfo, San Vito lo capo, Custonaci and Buseto Palizzolo.
Until 1846 the Agro Ericino extended for 40,000 hectares with a coastline of over 26 miles.
Then at the end of the 19th century much of the territory was attributed to Castellammare del Golfo.
Today the heart of the town of Erice is located on the mountain of the same name, with some villages downstream.
The village is a network of small and narrow streets (in some places allow the passage of only one person at a time) that open onto breathtaking scenery, real terraces overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The houses have beautiful inner courtyards intimately defended from the sight of passers-by, all immersed in a quiet and silent, almost surreal atmosphere. At 751 meters above sea level, the air here is always fresh, even on the hottest summer days.
You can go to Erice even a hundred times and have the impression that it is always the first.
The weather conditions let it show itself in its many souls: wrapped in a cloud, gray and mysterious as in a fairy tale, or sunny and sparkling surrounded by beautiful pine forests, with a privileged view of the Mediterranean.
From Erice you can admire Mount Cofano, Trapani, the Egadi and on clear days your gaze can go to Pantelleria and Capo Bon.
Walking through the alleys you can admire the many workshops of artisans where you can not resist the purchase of souvenirs, not to mention the pastry shops that will be a constant temptation.
