Chiesa delle anime del purgatorio

The church of the Souls of Purgatory is located in Trapani (TP) in the square Purgatory, along the street dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi . Its construction began in 1688 thanks to a project by Don Pietro Castro. The facade, dating back to 1712, was the work of the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico Trapani, whose body is buried in the church.

It was damaged during the Second World War and reopened for worship only in 1962. Inside it houses every year the 20 sacred groups of the secular Procession of the Mysteries of Trapani.
The facade is divided into two orders and houses 12 plastered stone statues by the artist Alberto Orlando, depicting the 12 apostles and Jesus . Inside the plant is a Latin cross, divided into three naves by means of columns. The side aisles host three chapels with as many altars . There is also a transept with chapels at the ends of each arm, a minor apse and a raised presbytery and balustrade. It also houses numerous works of art  . Among these stand out those of the artist Giuseppe Felici , depicting respectively the Passion of Jesus Nazarene (XVII) and San Gaetano contemplating the humanity of Jesus Christ (XVIII) .

Worthy of note are also the gouache paintings by the artist Domenico La Bruna, on the themes of the Purification of Souls , depicting San Giuseppe and San Lorenzo (XVIII).
